The window is mid March through April
In Central New Jersey, most spring cleanups happen between mid March and the end of April. The exact timing depends on the weather that year, but the goal is to get the property cleaned up after winter and prepped for the growing season before everything starts pushing new growth.
Going too early is a problem. If the ground is still frozen or saturated from snowmelt, heavy equipment and foot traffic will compact the soil and damage turf. Going too late is also a problem. Dead leaves and debris left on beds and lawn through spring smother new growth, trap moisture, and create conditions for fungal disease.
The sweet spot is when the ground has thawed enough to work but before the lawn and perennials have started actively growing. For most properties in Somerset County and the surrounding area, that is somewhere in the second half of March through mid April.
What spring cleanup includes
Debris and branch removal. Winter storms leave branches, twigs, and other debris scattered across the lawn and beds. Everything gets cleared before any detail work starts.
Leaf and organic matter clearing. Leaves that accumulated in beds, along fence lines, and in corners during fall and winter need to come out. Matted leaves left in beds smother plants and create pest habitat.
Perennial cutback. Dead growth from last season's perennials gets cut back to make room for new growth. The timing on this matters because cutting too early can expose crowns to late frost damage.
Bed edge cleanup. Turf edges along beds, walkways, and driveways get cleaned up so the property lines look sharp before the mowing season starts.
Mulch bed prep. If fresh mulch is going down (which most properties do in spring), the beds need to be prepped first. Old mulch gets raked, weeds pulled, and edges defined before new material is spread.
Gutter and fence line clearing. Leaves and debris that collected along fence lines, foundation edges, and gutter discharge areas get cleaned out.
Why timing matters for the rest of the season
A property that skips spring cleanup or does it too late starts the season behind. The lawn has to fight through debris and compacted leaves to get going. Beds look neglected because dead growth from last year is still standing. And the longer the mess sits, the more work it takes to get things back to baseline.
Spring cleanup is also the best time to pair related work. Mulching, pruning, pre emergent crabgrass applications, and the first mow of the season all connect to cleanup timing. Having everything done together by one crew means the property resets at once instead of getting worked on in disconnected phases over several weeks.
