Retaining Walls & Stone Steps

Retaining walls, garden walls, seat walls, and stone step construction that adds structure, improves access, and transforms the look of the property.

How retaining walls and steps are built

Based in Hillsborough, Sultan Services builds retaining walls and stone steps for residential and commercial properties across Somerset County and the surrounding Central New Jersey area. Whether the project is a structural retaining wall to hold a slope, a front entry rebuild with new steps and a landing, or seat walls around a patio, the work is built on a proper base with drainage behind the wall and materials that match the rest of the property. Every wall and step system is constructed to handle the grade, manage water, and hold up through freeze and thaw cycles year after year.

Common wall and step projects

Most projects fall into a few categories: structural retaining walls that hold back a slope and create usable flat space, front entry steps and stoops that replace old crumbling concrete or unsafe access, garden and landscape walls that define planting beds and add structure to the yard, seat walls built into patio designs, and tiered or terraced walls on steeper lots where a single wall would be too tall.

On sloped New Jersey properties, wall and step work is often doing double duty. It solves a structural grade problem while also improving how the property looks from the street or from the backyard. That is why these projects frequently connect to patios, walkways, drainage, and landscape work.

What makes a wall or step system last

The most common reason walls fail is water getting trapped behind them. That pressure builds up over time and pushes the wall out. Sultan Services prevents that by installing perforated drain pipe and clean stone behind every retaining wall so water has somewhere to go. The base is excavated below grade and compacted solid before the first block is set.

For taller walls, geogrid reinforcement is built in to anchor the wall into the slope behind it. Steps are built on their own compacted base with even riser heights so they feel safe and look clean. These details are what keep the work looking right and holding up through New Jersey winters.

Materials we work with

Sultan Services works with wall block from Techo-Bloc, Belgard, Unilock, and other top manufacturers in a range of colors, textures, and profiles. For a more natural look, we also build with fieldstone, boulders, and natural stone.

Step treads are usually bluestone, granite, or matching block caps depending on the style. The material choice is always coordinated with any surrounding patio, walkway, or landscape work so the finished result looks like one connected project, not separate pieces.
